Jess Murphy talk to Mai Nguyen from Viet Nam, who was studying economics at Oregon State University in the United States, and asked him to explain the experience of the United States
Where did you learn today?
At the University of Oregon State in the United States.
Q. Why did you enrol on a course of lectures you and what made you choose this University?
There are three reasons. The first one because Oregon has a very small population of Viet Nam. I want to be able to feel the culture is totally different. I don't want to come here just to mingle with the community of Viet Nam only and not learning anything about about the new culture. The second reason is because it is a very beautiful place of Oregon. I grew up in a big city with a crowd of people everywhere. In the place of my birth, rarely able to see trees, grass, and blue sky. I can not see the stars at night, because it is covered by a skyscraper buildings and lights. Here, when I left the campus and go exploring, I don't meet people; What I have found is the Lakes, mountains, trees, and forests. It is that I always dreamed about! I want to live among the beautiful nature. And the third reason is because I received my scholarship through Intercultural Services Program (ICSP). How lucky I am! Beasiswanya is great and very helpful.
Q. What is the reason You chose your destination country?
Like so many students, I want to grab ' the American Dream '! To do that, I need to focus on skills such as speaking, reading and writing. College is a big project-if you want to finish it and become a useful person you can't just jump in without any plan. Know how to read and write ... and do it well. This is my goal.
Q. in the first few weeks of College, how your University can help you fit in?
One of my professors Liebowitz, Flora, has helped me a lot. I consider him a mentor of mine, even though he was not officially in my main Department. Likewise, the Professor of Economics I and friends are very friendly and supportive.
Q. How do you can find suitable accommodation?
I've lived in housing of Orchard Court Family since arriving here. I know from friends of Viet Nam my graduate students here. I love it here! Very cheap to live here and because it can be extremely competitive to find a place. Most utilities included-we only have to pay for electricity. I am also pleased with the fact that I was a part of a community. We have a Community Center, a playground for children and a weekly meeting to talk about how to improve the community. This is a family friendly place and a very good place to live.
Q. How do you socialize in your University?
I ' caught up ' with clubs such as ISOSU (International Students of OSU) and ICSP (Intercultural Service programs) because I know the clubs before I arrived. Turned out to be very useful. Through this Assembly of the two, I get the opportunity to get to know other cultures (in addition to the American culture) and mingle with them. I never thought people could meet Saudi Arabia or Armenia, but I talk to everyone, and it was so much fun.
In the ISS (Intercultural Student Services), they have a relaxing sitting room or lounge for students to mingle. Many of them are international students or students from minority groups. There are many international students who come to talk to each other.
Q. What are the biggest challenges you face in your first year?
Familiarize yourself with the way of thinking here is still difficult. I can speak in United Kingdom, but it doesn't mean I can mengartikulasi such as native Americans. It's really hard, though I have a good United Kingdom language pronunciation doesn't mean I can say things that make sense or be able to make people laugh. One of my goals here is to be able to join the debate or argument about the economy or policy. But I find myself totally silent with my classmates. They are very good at speaking, they have a way of reasoning that impresses me, but I can't replicate it. Now I am really starting to read a lot of news and try to read more books in my field in order to build up the thinking on it, because of how Asia is very different from the West.
